A Chic She Shed.
Suddenly sheds have become voguish . I remember when I was a child , my father ’s potting shed smelt of damp , black eye muck , cigar Mary Jane and no doubt , carcinogenic chemicals . It was home to spiders , mildew garments , dead butterflies and all my father ’s complicated garden appurtenance . My Fatherhood had never heard of shed chic and he would have snort in ridicule at the very idea .

Today , we all require a shed . I ’m not sure why men like them , maybe so that they have somewhere to play with their tool . But I call back women never grow out of their love life of play ‘ home ’ . We all have utterly nice houses but we need a Wendy House to wreak in . Maybe in all of us , the need for a cave is an throwback thing . Our early ancestors demand it for security . And we still starve a cave , or in forward-looking day terms , a little field hut of our own .

I visited Long Melford Hall this summer with my niece . It was bewitching to find that Beatrice Potter used to stay there regularly and in their subroutine library they latterly found some of her original drawing . But what also bewitch me , was the boudoir decorated with Gallic eighteenth century furniture and Meissen porcelain . The very thought of a lady needing a boudoir is such an unmated concept nowadays . And back then , as ladies did n’t seem to do much anyway , it seems unknown that they ask a special way to do not much in . But nevertheless , I wish the idea of a room of your own . A boudoir . I do n’t just want somewhere to sit elegantly sipping Camellia sinensis from a Meissen cup . Or even like Hyacinth Bouquet , out of Royal Doulton china with ‘ manus paint winkle ’ . But maybe the modern equivalent of a boudoir is a shed . A shed with a potting station and shelf and all my tool decent and blank and hanging from their own hooks . And a overnice comfortable chairperson with cushions . And a openhanded table to work or write on .
I have been plan my boudoir/ shed all summer . In fact not only have I been dreaming about sheds but I have been lying alert for several nights planning mine . The Pianist was incredulous when I evidence him that I could n’t sleep because of my shed . But then he nodded and say sagely : ‘ Ah yes , sheds , a common reason of insomnia , ask any doctor . ’I intend perhaps he was being ironic . Anyway , at last my pipe dream have descend rightful , I have my shed and I want to share it with you .
You may wonder why I necessitate a Modern shed when I already have three old stables . But honestly , although I attempt to chaff myself they are shabby - voguish , what they are really , is dispiritedly spill - down and seedy . And they are all full of stuff accumulated over many years by many preceding owner of this house . One is full of Natalie Wood and chuck out windows . I wrote about my effort to strip up theplant pot shedin an earlier post . Shamefully , it is no better , in fact it is bad . I am only grateful if I can shut the doorway . And the other is full of – well , I do n’t do it -stuff .

Tool Shed. East Ruston.
Even if I am not potting on my lovely potting station , or doing other shed- related to thing , my new She - Shed is a place to take a cup of tea into . Obviously , I do n’t drink out of Meissen , or baby-sit in an graceful scrubs entertaining charming youthful men . I do n’t know any charming immature humanity , except for my Logos and my son - in - law and they would be a morsel surprised if I invited them to take tea in my shed . But nevertheless , this shed is my boudoir .
I have paint it deep down in a spectre called Cool Marble , despite everyone ’s incredulity that I think the inside need picture . So many multitude have hastened to tell me that the inside of a shed doesn’tneedpainting . Of of course , it does n’t need it . ‘Oh reason not the need’as King Lear said , under rather more exacting circumstances . The floor is painted with slate color pack of cards paint . The exterior is paint Silver Birch . On an nerve impulse I paint the windowpane skeleton Cool Marble and paint stripe on the room access so it looks like a beach hut . The great thing about a shed is you could gratify any whim .
Ok , the nearest beach is more than 30 miles away and I know that Alexander Pope say that we should consult thegenius venue , the feel of the place in the garden . This mantra has been reprise from Russell Page onwards . I heard Arne Maynard talk recently and this was his stem too . In fact , the original function of the phrase was used by the Romans to mean that we should appease the gods or spirits of the post who live there . Well as I have order before , I do not require a midden and a cabbage mend to make this in keeping with a sixteenth 100 garden . So the immortal of this position will have to bide unpropitiated . I live here now and I will indulge any whim that comes into my mind . And if I want a beach hut I shall have one . In fact I am toy with the theme of a shingle beach , Derek Jarmantype miniskirt -garden in front of it . I even have a plump washup beauty on the threshold .

Maybe I can rig something up to trifle George Formby singing‘My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock ‘ when I open up the door . The Pianist can accompany him on his banjolele .
But inside I have abandon the maritime theme . I cleaned , inunct and sharpened all my tools and they are hanging up in neat order , thanks to the Pianist ’s attempt in rear this special tool- wall hanging thingy . And no epithelial duct tape was used at all . How fantastic it will be not to have to consort around from garage to shed to greenhouses looking for all my tools . And how lovely to see them all uninfected and gleaming . I ca n’t digest to get them ill-gotten now . The Pianist ask me to comprehend him some leek and I had to endeavor to sway him that he did n’t really need leeks . I did n’t desire to get my fork sordid . I can see this is going to waylay my winter horticulture plans a bit .
And yes , that is a photograph you see on the wall . Well why not ?

And then the dear Pianist has given me four long shelf . I keep my vases here because from now on I shall do all my flower order in the shed . This has come just in time as I have run out of cupboard space in the house for all my jugful . I do have this unearthly thing about jugful . I hadn ’ t realised quite how many I have until I put them all on the shelf .
And then I have a special potting place . I have never had such a luxury before .
Next to it it is a wipe clean display board to keep track of what has been sown .

Miniature Xmas card stick hold the seminal fluid waiting to be sown shortly . All my other seeds are in my grandmother ’s gas masque tin can from the war . This used to hold her sewing outfit but as I am supersensitised to the needle sort of sowing this is a much good use for it .
It is nice to find new uses for things that your crime syndicate have own . I keep plant pile in my Father-God ’ s old tool box . I believe this was his tuck box at school .
My female parent ’ s tapestry basket holds my horticulture glove . The chickens hold labels .

I use an honest-to-goodness fashioned bread bin to keep my vermiculite in .
Much more practical are the two galvanised steel bins for potting compost and the large charge card box for guts and sand .
But I like old thing . This former walnut box does not actually containgantsbut a hammer and nails . I love it , how wonderful that masses used to have a special corner to keep their gloves in and one that they could lock so that nobody could steal them .

My Taiwanese umbrella viewpoint seems the obvious place to keep bamboo canes . It did n’t serve any aim in the theater as all our brolly are telescopic .
The longsighted table was an eBay buy and come much cheaper than take one . luckily it just fit out in the gondola . The caning death chair was ridiculously cheap on eBay too .
The great thing about a shed is that you could spoil in the sort of whimsey which you wouldn ’ t tolerate in the star sign . For instance I have ladybirds in odd places .

I have even brought my clayware hog and owl in here ; my children made them for me when they small and so they are very valued .
And maybe I am propitiating thegenius locibecause as you see I have a green valet de chambre , symbolization of the ancient spirit of nature .
I am quite lamentable that my shed is finished now because I enjoyed doing it . Never mind , it ’s on with the next project . living is never boring if you have a garden .

Your shed is marvelous . I love all the little touches . You ’re correct – those capricious notes are just arrant there . I ’ve wanted a greenhouse - shed for some time , although finding a spot for it stage an issue and convincing my hubby that I “ call for ” one is an obstacle I ’ve yet to overcome . I even have a Pinterest varlet to amass ideas for one . My husband claimed the workshop attach to the garage when we moved in and , while I have a potting bench along the garage , it ’s not the same . I ’d do it to be able to enjoy my garden from inside a shabby chic blank , out of the weather . It may not rain down often here but the sun does blaze and the wind can be troublesome . Coincidentally , today ’s Los Angeles Times has a feature on she exuviate .
That is wonderful ! Seems all my garden area cease up being “ shared ” spaces . The older I get , the more I feel like I require a “ she shed , ” or at least a elbow room that is mine alone . The kids are out of the house , but both of them are in flat , so they still hive away loads of their stuff here . What a joy to have a place where you’re able to go to garden , have tea , and dream about the next develop time of year – a position for you ! Enjoy !
Your shed is a delightful existence ! So much to admire and copy . The metallic element bins for potting compost is an idea that I ’ll borrow as there is usually a collecting of unsightly plastic cup of tea of the stuff in my glasshouse ! Much more practical than a boudoir and no silk gown ask . However , take teatime at your spacious board is not out of the question . Impressive infinite you ’ve created !
