Propagation , vegetables
I grew a couple of different varieties of chilli last year , with inert results . I ended up with a lot of plants , but not a lot of chilly . Do n’t get me wrong , it was n’t a full wash , just not enough for pickle or twist into relish . I had enough to take a bathtub in the freezer for the twelvemonth ’s preparation .
I have decided that this yr I ’m going to do chillies more purposefully . It ’s pass to be chillie - tastic ! I ’ve been more selective with the varieties – last class I just grab whatever was left in the end of season sales agreement at the garden centre .

I plan to develop several different varieties this year :
The Pearls are from the Suttons 2018 range that I’mtrying out . There were just 10 seeds in the bundle which seems a little bit average compared to the 50 or 60 in the cayenne bundle . Perhaps these are just more unusual . They are obviously proficient for pickle . In any grammatical case , I am aiming for just a duo of big plants of each variety . In the UK , chillies need a long growing time of year to fruit well , and while some can be rise out of doors , most do good from warmer conditions . I ’ll be acquire mine in the greenhouse . I am aiming to pot the plants on until I get to 3L weed which should be a decent size for them to fruit in .
I have sown 5 to 10 seeds of each variety . This seems early in the year but I hope this will give them the farsighted possible growing season , and has the add together but important welfare of giving me a wintertime seed - sowing fix ! Chilli seeds need heat to germinate , 18 - 25 ° ascorbic acid or more . Last year I make right germination effect using the heated bench which is set to 20 ° c .

The downside of sowing at this prison term of year is the potential for leggy plants due to humble light level . Ideally I would have grow - light but I will have to make do with good quondam fashioned sun and hope that ’s enough . I ’ll bite them out as soon as orotund enough and grow ab initio in 7 cm pots which I ’ll move to a sunny spot in the nursery .
In a fit of chilli enthusiasm , I ’ve just ordered seeds for a few more varieties , some hotter ones this time . I ’ll sow in a few of each once they get in the post .
Chilli - tastic !
