Astrophytum capricornevar.niveumis a slow - growing cactus with a small stem that usually has 8 rib and 6 to 8 spines per areole . The stem is ab initio ball-shaped and becomes cylindrical with age , measuring up to 20 inches ( 50 cm ) tall and 8 inches ( 20 cm ) in diam .
