Our OWG Trial Plan Garden . you’re able to create any sizing with the box building block – but this 16 x 16′ layout grows enough for a category of four ! you may click to see the plan enlarged
Every year , we wish to judge a few new garden experimentation at the farm . Some fire out , others withstand their own – and every once in a great while , one guide to something really unexampled and exciting .
In the case of last year ’s tomato bucket and spud crate trials ( see : The Tomato Bucket , Growing Crate Potatoes ) – it worked so well we are creating a brand new 16′ x 16′ data-based container garden at the farm for 2016 ! One that we will call ourAny Age Anywhere Garden .

Our OWG Trial Plan Garden. You can create any size with the box units – but this 16 x 16′ layout grows enough for a family of four! You can click to see the plan enlarged
Today we ’ll cross the overall garden circle - up and layout , and next calendar week – the detail on how to build your own .
Any Age Anywhere Garden Basics
Why the name ? Because it ’s genuinely a great way for anyone , of any geezerhood , live anywhere , to grow some , most , or nearly all of their family ’s intellectual nourishment . Even when distance is circumscribed !
As much as we talk about the beauty , simple mindedness and easiness of raised row gardening ( see : raise Row Gardening Basics ) , – we realize that not everyone has the room or ability to grow with that panache . We find emails from all over the world asking for alternate horticulture methods for those with low yards , patios , or others that might have trouble call on the soil over or bend down to tend rows of crop .
Over the last two years – in addition to the primary garden at the farm – we experimented on a minuscule ordered series with a few traditional container horticulture methods – and then adding in some tricks and methods we apply in our own garden ( like theStake - a Cage ) to see what we could make .

The trial planters last year worked perfectly – and had high yields
The tryout planters last class worked perfectly – and had eminent yields
The end was simple . Design an attractive , inexpensive and functional container garden that anyone of any eld could plant . It needed to be dim-witted to create , maintain and harvesting – and conserve on space . It also of grade had to produce enough that you could turn some serious food !
Last year , we trialed tomato bucket container . We build wooden frames with scrap lumber that pass over the top of 5 Imperial gallon bucket or nursery container . We then confiscate a 4 ’ high x 16 ” wide telegram framing to the inside of the wooden frame for a build up - in , heavy - duty trellis . It was a take off of the Stake - A - batting cage that we use in our main garden – and it worked incredible – all at a cost of about $ 2 for the conducting wire treillage . If needed – we could have even made that from scrap lumber for free .

The high level pail allowed for easy lachrymation and maintenance . By screw in the treillage to the boxwood – it provided a perfect financial support for the Lycopersicon esculentum that was leisurely to reach and tie up the plant as it grew . The bucket supply more than enough elbow room to establish a mystifying and all over root system – and the cover not only made the plantation owner attractive , but helped to isolate the plant ’s base from rough winds and helped to conserve water . It also made harvesting a breeze .
BEST of all – it all but obviate weeding and terra firma pests like slugs . It also stopped potential scathe from field mouse , moles and rabbits – a problem many of you write to us about each year ! And with its thick space – it even made it easy to protect from raccoon and cervid . The same can be said for our potato crates .
Our tater crate were a magnanimous success ! ! ! spring up a lot of potatoes in a little space .

Our potato crates were a big success!!! Growing a lot of potatoes in a small space.
So we decided – why not design an entire garden around this concept ? After all – it can be built anywhere – a terrace , a small backyard – or even in the eye of a garden .
The OWG 16′ x 16′ Trial Garden
We settled on a 16′ x 16′ “ garden ” space using the buckets for planters – and then filling in the edges with mere raised beds for salads , potatoes and green .

What you have is a small space garden that can produce !
How much can it grow you ask ? Well , base on output levels from old trials – we look the following :
4 + Bushels/ Assorted Tomatoes , 2 + Bushels / Assorted Peppers , 1 + Bushel of Assorted Cucumbers / Zucchini , 1 + Bushel / Green Beans , 1.5 + Bushels / Potatoes – and Greens & Salads that can well feed a family line of four to six , with some to give to neighbour and friend !

The boxes are easy to build from any material – and add a touch of beauty to the garden
The box seat are easy to build from any cloth – and tot a touch of knockout to the garden
Not spoiled for a little blank garden ! In addition to trialing the garden at our farm – we will have a 16 x 16 Any Age Anywhere Garden on display in theWeaver Barns Urban House Areaat the Great Big Home + Garden Show in Cleveland Feb 5th through the fourteenth . We will be sure to share pictures of the stage set up on a succeeding Farm Update .
Next workweek – we ’ll cover the process of construct the planter boxes , develop crates , and laying out the garden . One bragging advantage – since the dirt nor plants never come in striking with the wood – you may use rescued lumber or pallets to construct your box – so for a resourceful person – they can be made for little or no cost !

felicitous Gardening ! – Jim and Mary
