Springtime blooms from a garden rife with challenges

Hi GPODers !

Today ’s photos come from Gail Bromer in Black Mountain , North Carolina . As the name hint , Gail gardens in a very mountainous region and plenty with something many gardener apprehensiveness : slopes . give the treacherous planting and growing condition , you might mistrust that she has limited garden space , but Gail has create garden legerdemain on just about every available in of her landscape painting . She was generous to deal what ’s been blossom this spring .

Here are some photos so far this time of year . It seems like we ’ve had more rain this spring than I remember in the last duet years . It has produced a muckle of blush , but they have n’t lasted as long because of the rains . I thought I was go to have fewer garden here than I had in Connecticut , where I garden for over 30 years , but I was awry . We live on the side of a mountain , and even with these slopes I am managing to fill all the useable space . It ’s taken some metre . The only matter that slow down me down are the chigoe . I harvest serviceberries this weekend for pies and got my first chigoe flea bit , which mean I do n’t go into our with child front side until mid - fall after the chiggers snuff it .

We moved here eight years ago . As with all gardens , some things have run , some have n’t , and some have necessitate to be moved to fly high .

The view above is off our driveway from part way down the front side . cockcrow is just beginning to arrive.(What a view ! I ’m not sure if any garden challenge would out weigh the natural endowment of waking up to this every cockcrow . )

The first azalea bloomer of the season.(Looks to be a ‘ Gulf Pride ’ azalea ( Rhododendron‘Gulf Pride ’ , Zones 6–9 ) , which is a fabulously fragrant early fuckup . )

Another breathtaking azalea , this time in sensational sundown people of colour with wonderfully frilly petals .

The pretty pink plants continue ! Here , a little pinkish peeress ’s slider ( Cypripediumacaule , Zones 2–9 ) is glowing in the sun .

Gail creates sensational plant life combinations in her garden as well . Here , abloody cranesbill(Geranium sanguineum , Zones 3–8 ) is the staring compliment to the yellow green Brigadoon St. John ’s Wort ( Hypericumcalycinum‘Brigadoon ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , with the mythical foliage of Carolina crane’s bill ( Geranium carolinianum , zone 2–11 ) bridging the gap .

This Ice N Rose hellebore(Helleborusxglandorfensis‘Ice N ’ blush wine ’ , Zones 6–9)has the most profuse blooms I have ever watch .

Aleatherleaf viburnum(Viburnum rhytidophyllum , Zones 6–9).I originally planted 3 , but only one survived .

Making the most of a tricky garden situation , Gail utterly cover this slope in flowers . A beautiful wild flower mixture creates a kaleidoscope of colors without having to on a regular basis wax these slope for maintenance .

I have half a dozen midget iris(Irispumila , Zones 4–9)scattered about . They seem to bloom better for me than the traditional whiskery iris .

And one final artful combination to wrap up our clock time in Gail ’s garden . Garden chives ( Alliumschoenoprasum , Zones 3–9 ) , one of the prettiest herbs out there , looking like a firework of color next to spire of lupin and burst of pinkpeonies .
