We had our first frost this week , our first killing hoar , which marks a significant gardening minute for me – a time when garden moves under glass , into the glasshouse , and I could n’t be happy . You see , I really opt gardening in the ‘ off season ’ , that is , gardening ‘ under Methedrine ’ . A greenhouse allow one like me to focalize , which means that I relish the process more .   It ’s like down - grading to a 30 foot by 30 foot garden . Ahhhh . Little pots of treasures , a 15 foot hosepipe , two tearing cans and some shiner . Oh , those mice . Hey , all I can say is that right now , the glasshouse smell more like peanut butter and aged chedder Malva sylvestris than it does like Osmanthus fragrant – just sayin ’ . Dinner is served .

This is the week when I can value each works . Decide if it is deserving dragging back into the nursery , or if it should be brought to the dumpster . Anyone with a glasshouse knows how valuable space is , and last year , this fact struck me – most of my aggregation has been with me for nearly a decade now , and although some plants are indeed true treasures , others are simply just luggage . The last think I want is a sustenance aggregation – watering , fertilise and repotting the same old Acacia Tree and Gardenias year after class – yawn .

So pink slips have been hand out , and out go more Clivia and agapanthus , and in will come more interesting plants , that is , if I can find something that I have not collected or grown yet !

My sand bed are raised , aluminum bed with crisp sand which I keep dampish . Clay pots can then get out pee , through osmosis which allow a more born source of water for many wintertime rainfall plants , such as those found grow in the western Cape of South Africa , or Chile . Each year I prove to mix things up , changing the display in these bed to please my mad intellect ( come in on , now one else sees them ! ) . So I can curate them any way I want . I ’ve been thinking about dedicating one to winter vegetables , perhaps salad greens or micro jet – a kitchen garden maybe . Another bed I may plant Carnations in , as that is a crop which I have not grown yet .

One affair both Joe and I have agreed on , is that we are bore with much of what is in the greenhouse aright now . Clivias and Agapanthus may be sacraficed in ordering to make elbow room for new collection . I ’ve been thinking about tot up to the camellia collection , and to the orchid collection ( cymbidiums and other cool growing orchids ) , and perchance more of those coolheaded , in high spirits elevation rhododendrons from Borneo – the Viryeas . Every plant gatherer frequently shakes thing up a bit , and I think this is the yr I prove some new thing . Otherwise , I risk just becoming a caretaker , and not a discovery agent .
