Crocosmia – the Gladioli of the millenium .
Well , more acurately , the Irid of the Millenium . These members of the Iris kin are the South African bulbous plant that is taking the horticultural worldly concern by tempest , a dn just because you ca n’t find them at your local Home Depot , Tescos or Home core , it does n’t intend that thay are n’t red-hot . Hardy in USDA ZOne 6 and warmer ( I am in geographical zone 5B , outside of Boston ) they can winter over a geographical zone or two colder give the proper site .
Once known as Montbretia , ( and still referred as such in previous horticulture books ) the Crocosmia is quicky becoming the ‘ IT ’ plant , well , if you could come up IT . Sure , you may find the sure-enough stand by Crocosmia ‘ Lucifer ’ . a hardey redish flowering form sometimes uncommitted at garden core , but I exhort you to try some of the new crosses , for they are still comparatively unsung , and why not be the first person on your block with these flaming colors in your garden . The new crossbreeding are more available in the UK , where many new crosses exist , as well as some major collection , here in the USA , only a few mailorder glasshouse carry the really fine hybridizing , , and they trade out too soon . examine Heronswood ( www.heronsnwood.com and Plant Delights . The plants I recieved from Plant Delights Nursery , we ’re much more vigorous and bigger than the Heronswood plant life ( I order a XII from each , but the varieties are different , so it ’s worth trying both as beginning . The Plant delights plants make it plant in square nusery pots , nicely tie in plastic bags , the Heronswood ( now owned by Burpee ) plants arrived tossed around promiscuous in a corner , with only newspaper as packing material , and the flora we ’re almost bushed , knocked out of thier ground and pots . Of naturally , this could have happened in merchant marine , but with ten long time of Dan Hinkley conduct wadding , this never occur . This fall or next spring , be sure to arrange the novel hybrid and crosses of Crocosmia , not only are they spectacular performers , spreading slowly and nicely , they are a magnificent flare-up of color , in the August Garden , and in a palette that is completing with stylish limes and chartruse , as well as Burgundy wine foliaged plants . A choice of my first yr institute Crocosmia .
