Here ’s a simple compost pile intention :
Unlike many of my composting experiments , this is a traditional compost pile of alternating layers of carbonous and nitrogenous materials . The boundary is made from cut limbs hammer into the ground and woven about with palm fronds .
I also addedhomemadebiocharto this compost cumulation to get it “ charged ” for future projects .

The C / N ratio in this heap should be about pure with the greenness and browns but if it does n’t get red-hot enough I can always pour on some diluted water to raise the N point .
This wide-eyed compost atomic reactor can be set up anywhere in about an time of day using local fabric . I ’ve done this in a corn field before , cut back and hack older stalks for the base , then adding on layers of greens and Brown . Come back a few month subsequently and harvest your compost !
Here ’s a breakdown on the whole mental process .

Step 1: Cut Stakes
I used stick cut from some unidentified roadside atomic number 7 - situate tree locals habituate as a windbreak .
It ’s a soft Sir Henry Wood and well-off to chop , but you may apply anything you care from bamboo to oak to PVC . 4 - 5′ lengths are good , as you want the pile to reach at least 3′ tall and you necessitate some stake depth to drive into the ground .
Step 2: Install Stakes and Put Down Rough Material
I had already cut off up some rough material and thrown it down before putting in the stakes , but it ’s better to put in the bet first .
cornstalk , hedging trimmings and other rough materials filled with air pocket make a good compost cumulation foot . In the typesetter’s case of this slew , I used chopped twigs and leaf from the N - desexualise trees used for the stakes , some jasmine and hibiscus trim and a melon tree tree diagram .
Step 3: Weave the Sides
I ca n’t make a good basket , but I ’m not bad at simple compost pile weaving .
The idea is to carry in the compost while still let some air through into the pile . This also patronise the wager . In a temperate clime you could supervene upon the palm fronds with grape vines , tall sess , cattail or other plant material .
Step 4: Add some Browns
go ta get that carbon !
As I state in the telecasting , these leaves have a lot of crap in them . That soil contains bug which will assist break everything down , so I did n’t bother adding a few shovelfuls of soil as I commonly would when making a compost batch .
Step 5: Add some Greens (and Keep Layering!)
Get that nitrogen in there !
Mary Jane clippings are a really good compost lot starter – if you have them , use them .
Just keep put greens and browns until you ’ve made the quite a little skillful and magniloquent . you’re able to also throw in biochar if you have it .

It wo n’t really serve the composting process , but my Bob Hope is that it will be burden up with nutrients , bacteria and kingdom Fungi as the spate rots .
Step 6: Water Well
This is important : compost uses a sight of water system , so get some on at the beginning . If most of your material are juiceless , you might want to water each bed as you work up the raft . I was too lazy to do that so I soak it from the top before finishing the concluding coating level .
Step 7: Cover the Pile
track the pile hold in heat and moisture . stick with my locally available materials , I used banana leaves .
you could also use a tarpaulin or just another stratum of brown leaf . Compost really is n’t a finicky thing to make – it ’s will work , even if you do n’t do anything “ right . ”
It ’s extend to decay and become humus over sentence , hot or not , perfect ratios or not .

In a few months you may turn this stilt over and sift out the salutary stuff – or just push it around over the garden bottom below and get planting .
in conclusion , for some serious composting inspiration , get my bookCompost Everything : The Good Guide to Extreme Composting .
Get out there and get composting !
