They issue forth a few time each week to our web log from all over . enquiry from those wanting to know how they can protect their plant from maraud deer !
We have been evenhandedly golden at the farm when it add up to damage from bucks and does . For the most part – our 5 ’ mellow spot and board fencing has maintain them from stroll through our garden . In addition , our laboured planting of ornamental gage and capsicum pepper plant throughout the landscape ( low on their “ love to eat tilt ” ) have never seemed to interest them .
But we are not immune from their impairment . Just last fall – they destroyed our newly plant and unprotected apple trees – stripping the barque clean , and ripping the leaves to tag end .

The the true is , when it comes to deer – unless you are willing , capable and ready to build some pretty mellow and expensive fencing – you ’re croak to have some damage from time to metre .
With that aver – there are protective steps you could take to help deter the damage deer can induce . Here are three methods that can help :
Plant Smart From The Start

The paint from the beginning is to not create habitats that invite and make it well-off for cervid to savor a free lunch ( or dinner ) .
Plants like strawberries , hostas , phlox and tulips are among the favorites of cervid – so if you do set them – plant them in area nigh to the business firm – or that are easy to protect with a net or simple deer fencing . We net our strawberry to keep out the deer and chick .
Black eyed susans , daffodil , lavender , and ornamental locoweed and peppers on the other hand , are low on their “ want to exhaust ” list . This is not to say they wo n’t ever feed them – just that they do n’t favour them . Remember that a athirst deer , like a athirst human – will consume almost anything .

We also post plants attractive to deer in their own sequester areas . A great instance of this is our Zea mays everta crop , which deer dearest ! We plant it away from the steady vegetable garden – so if they do detect it – they will only get the edible corn and not the other vegetables . To protect it even better – we plant it powerful behind a rack of cosmetic grasses and peppers . It ’s not jester - proof – but it does provide better protection than merely putting it in a row in the garden .
FENCING :
Fencing is the only dependable way to keep cervid away from plants . The problem is , to do it aright – it can be expensive and not all that attractive . Most are surprised to find how high you have to build it ! Deer fence has to be at a minimum of 8 ’ eminent to become totally efficacious – and for most – it ’s just but be prohibitory .

galvanising fence can work as well – but again – you need the wire to be high and the daze to be high-pitched as well .
Fencing , however can be used in small areas and smaller heights to be effective . Most cervid will not jump into small confined surface area – so a round-eyed metal situation and telegram fence can do a reasonable job protect small vegetable or flower garden plot of land .
Using Netting To Protect Small Trees , Shrubs and Plants

Another way to protect belittled trees and shrub is with less expensive deer netting . For us – uncomplicated cervid netting has work well to protect our immature trees in the orchard . you could buy a 100 ’ x 7 ’ coil of cervid netting for around $ 35 – and its enough to do about ( 10 ) 6 ’ tree diagram .
We place a few stakes on either side to bear the netting – and then wrap it around the entire tree diagram to protect it . The loose netting makes it hard for deer to get at the plants .
For small bush – just get over completely in the loose netting – shit it hard for the deer to get at the delicate leave-taking they love to deplete . The same goes for small plant like strawberry mark and hostas .

A round-eyed draping of deer netting establish it hard for the deer to get to the supply ship plant life leafage or yield .
SPRAYS :
you may also use a mixed bag of homemade sprays to dissuade cervid from your plantings .

Deer , like humanity , do n’t like to crunch on foul - smell or savour food for thought – and spraying the foliage of plants can really keep harm to a minimum .
The key here is to reapply every week or two – and after any gruelling rain . Here are two sprays that have been proven to be in effect :
Egg Spray :

A solution of 20 % overbold eggs and 80 % water is a widely know effective cervid deterrent .
Mix up the eggs and piddle in a liquidiser and employ with a heart nebuliser to the foliage of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and works – making sure to cover areas high-pitched enough where the cervid can strain .
One word of caution though – it ’s for a sprayer to become clotted with the bollock nebuliser , so you may need to clean the tip a few metre during software .
Hot Pepper Spray :
Hot pepper spray is another well - known effective atomizer when combating deer and other foragers .
Although many hot peppers can work for this – habanero ’s work great for this ! As for solution persuasiveness – 1 cup of diced habanero ’s to 8 cups of water supply is a near pattern of ovolo .
meld them together , have the mixture steep for a sidereal day or two , and then strain and apply with a pump sprayer . Be careful when spray – if the mixture gets in your eyes or skin – it can be very painful .
Last but not least – retrieve that prime metre for cervid to look for food is through the recent fall , winter and other spring months – when nature is less likely to provide for them .
It is during these times you will need to be more diligent about protection .
