1.Sunny Knock Out® Rose
Name:Rosa‘Radsunny’
Usda Hardiness Zones:4 to 7
Size:3 to 4 feet tall and 3 foot across-the-board
Conditions : Full sun ; well - drained , fertile soil

This rose has been a cheery , low - maintenance addition to the new fragrant garden at Olbrich Botanical Gardens . Like other Knock Out ® roses , the industrial plant gambol glossy green foliage , rest clean even during the spicy and humid summertime of 2016 , the fourth wettest Wisconsin summer on record . The multitoned flower clusters give rise freely throughout summer with canary - colored bud opening into gay single flowers and aging to pantry ivory . I especially savour the adorable scent : honey , apricot , and a touch sensation of citrus tree . The vase - work form mix in easily with other plant , my favored being lavender(Lavandulaspp . and cvs . Zones 5–8 ) .
2.‘Southern Charm’ Mullein
Name:Verbascum‘Southern Charm’
Zones:5 to 8
Size:3 human foot tall and 18 inch blanket
Conditions : Full sunlight ; dry , skimpy soil

Spying one lone specimen on a private garden tour , I was entranced by the wild-eyed shading of this flora ’s flower . ‘ Southern Charm ’ has abundant flower spikes , up to 2 feet tall , which are lined with floweret in graceful pastel subtlety of lavender , rose , blab , and buff . Each floret is highlighted with a fuzzy over-embellished center . The plant grow easily from seed , bloom heavy in their first year , and survive winter with no job . The initial midspring bloom can be extended with deadheading . When the plant starts to face moth-eaten in midsummer , shear it to the ground to further refreshful foliage and sporadic reblooming . Plant ‘ Southern Charm ’ mullein with ‘ Husker Red ’ penstemon(Penstemon digitalis‘Husker Red ’ , Zones 3–8 ) and ‘ Toffee Twist ’ sedge(Carex flagellifera‘Toffee Twist ’ , Zones 7–9 ) to make a beautiful , drought - resistant compounding .
3.‘Blue Paradise’ Phlox
Name:Phlox paniculata‘Blue Paradise’
Zones:4 to 8
Size:2 to 3 foot tall and 1 to 2 feet panoptic
Conditions : Full sun to fond shade ; moist , well - drained soil

This phlox assortment , introduced by Piet Oudolf , is one of those works that literally stops hoi polloi in their tracks . The blossom color is entrancing , variegate in tone and intensity level , depending on lighting and the time of daylight . It is , at time , a delicate periwinkle or lilac and later an iridescent indigotin . The individual floret are highlighted with a dark purple optic , and dark - colored stems offset the uncontaminating , deep green foliage . ‘ Blue Paradise ’ gets even more points for its sweet vanilla - garlic clove fragrance , long bloom time , and compact habit .
4.‘Goldtau’ Tufted Hair Grass
Name:Deschampsia cespitosa‘Goldtau’
Zones:4 to 9
Size:2 to 3 feet magniloquent and 2 feet wide
Conditions : Sun to partial shade ; moist , well - drained grease

A new low - upkeep garden that graces our visitant nub have a generous drift of this handsome grass . Throughout the summer , arching deep fleeceable folio grow to form a tidy mound of leafage . The real show begins in late summertime with a vivacious floral exhibit : abstemious light-green panicles grow an extra foot above the leaf and burst open into an airy , shimmery swarm . ‘ Goldtau ’ means “ lucky dew ” in German ; it really shines in a location with some backlighting . In winter , the flowers turn a decent sunburn while the foliage remains semievergreen .
