I just renewed my membership with the Hudson Valley Seed Library because of this year’s Community Seed offering.

About two summers ago , I grew Purple pod peas as a member ofHudson Valley Seed Library ’s Community Seed Program . I enjoyed the process of growing specialness pea germ in my vegetable garden and then turn back some to the library at the end of the time of year . Those seeds were planted the next year as part of the library ’s cum contribution program .

This year Hudson Valley is proffer a new approach to the Community Seed program . Library members will get to spring up ‘ Breed Your Own ( BYO ) Zucchini ’ and try their hands at backyard plant breeding .

Hudson Valley Seed Library will provide the seeds and all the how - to ’s for start plant breeders . In monthly installments , gardeners will hear how to identify desirable plant trait and how to make survival of the fittest . Instructions for cross breeding and saving seeds are part of the process , too .

I ’ve never purposely breed vegetable plants , so this is travel to be a hands - on experiment in my own outdoor acquisition research lab .

Each parcel of ‘ BYO Zucchini ’ seeds contains a random assortment of heirloom and open - pollinated zucchini kind . With the help of the Seed Library , I ’ll learn how to select the plant I desire to grow in the future or create an altogether raw zucchini combining .

While this is a new approach for the Community Seed plan , plant breeding is an historic period - old unconscious process . Without the work of early plant breeders and cum savers , gardeners would n’t have the rich multifariousness of fruits and veg we produce in our garden today .
