I believe there are three main considerations you should take into account when be after a survival garden : calories , victuals and ease of growing . Today I ’ll take a flavour at all three and help you consider through good options for each .

Gardening with Calories in Mind

Have you ever tried to fill up on salad ? It ’s not comfortable unless you dilute up on the croutons , trim , shredded Malva sylvestris , Viscount St. Albans minute , olives …

render fill up your tum with homely lettuce . There ’s really not much to run on .

A selection garden ’s primary focus should be on continue you and your menage filled up and run . Going without enough calories dulls your intellect and sap your strength , so plan them in when you grow your garden .

Grains are one of the most common sources of calories ; however , they do n’t usually make much sense to maturate on a small scale due to the large amount of body of work that goes into harvesting and processing them .   There ’s also mounting grounds that some food grain really are n’t all that good for you ( I ’m looking at you , wheat ! ) .

Roots are the best alternative for a survival garden due to their gamey caloric yield and relaxation of cookery for the table .

tater are the king of root crops since they ’re high small calorie , easy to rise , raise good yields and are also decent nutritionally . I ’d follow them up with sweet potatoes and turnip . If you have at least a subtropical clime , you may also grow some of the tops - fat etymon crops from the tropics such as manioc and genuine yams .

Other possibilities include beets , carrot , daikon radishes and yellow turnip .

Gardening with Nutrition in Mind

Once you ’ve planned in lots of root , it ’s time to think about the wide range of vitamins and mineral that will keep you in good health .

Some of the best source of nutriment are wild foods such as nettles , Charles Edward Berry , nuts and various foraged greens ; however , there are quite a few very tidy vegetables deserving planting as well .

One of my dearie is kale . Every fall we engraft a vainglorious bed of kale and other greens , allowing us to eat salad through the winter . Your climate may not allow this luxuriousness ; however , if you grow a good round of alimental vegetables like cabbages and carrots into the fall , they can often be stored for a seemly dowery of the wintertime . ( All wintertime , if you work the bread into sauerkraut ! ) .

In your survival garden , just skip over the lettuce and go for wellness - bundle vegetable like turnip super C , beet and Brassica oleracea italica . onion and Allium sativum are both nutritious and medicative , so plan some of those in — plus , do n’t forget the herbs ! Rosemary , oregano , lot , Petroselinum crispum — these are nourishing - impenetrable and healing .
