As I ride down to indite for the first time in weeks , the political noise on social medium is taking a backseat to more important matter . An entire summertime of picture are downloaded and sorted , the first round of edits are back in my project manager ’s hands , and my rule book cover is settle . The house is clean , the baby is sleeping , and I ’ve even squeezed in some long - delinquent garden chores . ( This picture , by the agency , is an overgrown beet that had been sit in dirt for over a year ! ) In spite of emotion running rearing and the reality reel from the election this past week , my overarching feeling today is , “ It ’s honest to be back . ”

I know fall has been encounter for virtually two months now , but it finger like I ’ve only just caught up with summer . come along onThe New Camp Cookbookhas been moving along swiftly , and strangely , I ’m psyched to be blogging again — even after pour out 50,000 parole into my manuscript .

You might remember where we last leave behind off with the book : I’d returned from a two - week road trip around the Southwest and the Rockies , the first of several trips that we need this summer to shoot content and develop formula .

Marion Mountain Campground in Idyllwild

A couple weeks after coming menage , we were off again to Idyllwild , California , to take the book covert at Marion Mountain Campground . What we ’d originally contrive as three days in inner circle turned into six day and an ambitious picture shoot that spread over two adjacent campsites . ( There ’s so much to share about the cover version   — and the final choice that storm us — which I ’ll detail in a outgoing post . )

A span workweek after that , we adopt the most adorable drone fromHappier Camper(a local business organisation in Silverlake that ’s down it with their retro - revolutionize but first-rate innovative motor home designs ) and headed up the seashore to Ventura and Santa Barbara . Out there , we spent another few days tenting at an RV green , misrepresent on the beach , sharing our meals with the three peeress camping on either side of us ( each of them taking solo RV trips — how cool is that ? ) , and shooting another round of recipes .

Then we had a week of photography at home , using tablecloth and rustic surfaces you might recognize from the premature book . Up until that full stop , I ’d been doing all of my cooking and strip at rather primitive campsites and let me tell you , having hot feed water andespeciallya dishwasher was such a luxury !

Camping clothesline

As you could credibly guess , the garden suffered a snatch this summertime and we only kept a duo of raised bed going . The rest weremulched with strawso we could start fresh in the gloaming . On the upper side , I scored a triumph against the flea beetles this class and had an excellent harvest of tomatillos , which I ’d been trying to raise for the past two years . ( These golden Mexican husk tomato are theAmarylla miscellanea . )

Our word of mouth , which are somewhat picky , really produced a becoming grape harvest and we think back to pick them before they turned into raisins .

And all of our fruit tree and shrubs were blend gangbusters , which regrettably for us ( buthappily for the chicken ) meant there werelotsof fig beetle buzzing around the grounds . Among doing other things …

Here ’s that beet again , placed next to an apple for scale . Yes , I tried to cook it , and no , it was n’t comestible .

At the buttocks ending of summer , we run into the route one last time to Montana and Oregon , passing through Utah , Wyoming , Idaho , and Washington along the direction . The Berry Fire forced us to pass a night in Driggs , Idaho , and take a unexampled road northward from Jackson . That unexpected detour made me fall in love with the Teton Valley and , I got ta say , Driggs might be my new pet town at the second .

When we finally made it to West Glacier , Montana , the seasons literally convert with the arrival of the gloam equinox . The trees in the backyard of our cabin were green one hebdomad and gold the next , just like that . It was magical . While in Montana , Gemma checked off a few more firsts : kayaking , rafting , and chitchat her seventh national parkland . ( She was six months old at the time ! )

Setting up a recipe shot for The New Camp Cookbook

After three calendar week on the road , we come home , quetch up our human foot and sighed with alleviation . It was the busiest , wildest , most sport , and most inspiring summertime I ’ve ever had , but I amsohappy to be back — back to the blog , the garden , and the chickens , enjoy my wild meter and cooking just because . ( There ’s not a measuring spoonful in sight and I ’m feeling very rebellious about it ! )

Gemma was amazing through it all   — disrupted schedule , strange bed , long auto rides , nothing seemed to unnerve her — and I believe we ’ve got a bear explorer on our hands . When I was gathering snap for the al-Qur’an , I find some from her first camping trips at two and three month honest-to-goodness . She was so lilliputian ! It ’s concentrated to conceive she ’s now sit and presently to be crawling .

She ’s also turn into quite the little foodie . Her foray into substantial foods was a successful one , and she ’s rust nearly all the same thing that we ’re eating , evenpickled roast beets . We skip the puree phase and went straight to what ’s called sister - led weaning — fingerbreadth food , fundamentally . It ’s saved so much fourth dimension in the kitchen and aid introduce a huge variety of flavors and texture to her palate . There ’s no food this kid wo n’t eat up ! ( That ’s a pineapple guava in her paw , and I have a few formula coming for those of you who are drowning in feijoa harvests in good order now . )

Shooting The New Camp Cookbook in Idyllwild

And that bring us to today . If you ’re still reading this far along , thank you so much for being here . I substantiate the subject matter on my web log has been slender this class , and I truly treasure you flummox around while I juggle a novel book and new baby with an irregular traveling agenda and undependable wifi . Now that thing have slowed to a more laid-back pace , I ’m quick to catch up , recharge , and hatch new ideas .

In the coming month , I ’ll be start a series on rude pest control in the garden , sharing some behind - the - scenes peek at the qualification of my newfangled book , and most importantly , working on a full redesign of the blog , including a mobile - friendly theme . I ’m excited and committed to it .

Stay tuned !
