Recently , while go to the one-year Herb Society of America Conference in Tarrytown , New York , we made a visit toStone Barns Center for Food & Agriculturein Pocatico Hills , NY , which was well worthwhile the trip . If you are in the area , by all means , make an effort to visit these handsome gardens and experience the many aspect of a well laid out and attractive , yet working farm from glasshouse crops to field craw and orchard to flower and herbaceous plant gardens , livestock and bees .
Stone Barns is shape with the Rockefeller State Park Preserve to expand their study in agroecology . David Rockefeller left this land to the Preserve as part of his commitment to residential district , conservation and sustainable agriculture . They are a non - profit organization , which provide numerous scholarships .
Plan to spend a whole day here . Besides the garden , there are animals to positron emission tomography and the stone buildings , courtyard and silo are impressive . The cafe food for thought is quite wonderful and wholesome – and innovative ( yes ! ) . Foodie that I am , I have to line a few of the fantabulous comestibles . We shared an exposed - faced watermelon radish ( very thinly slice up ) sandwich with Brassica oleracea italica butter on whole - texture sourdough , a piece of foccaccia with tomato , basil , Allium cepa , wild mushrooms and a mushroom pate ( ! ) , an splendid iced latte with oh - my - gosh a warm Armerican cheddar chive biscuit ( had Indian meal in it ) . We call for the chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies home , along with a little loaf buckwheat cake with raspberries and an exquisite whole - wheat croissant .
The gift shop has an unbelievable selection of cool stuff from the variety of Christian Bible I care to read ( I buy four although they were n’t all for me ) , not to name cooking equipment and pottery , cocktail ingredients and mixology bric-a-brac , jewelry , hat , scarves and tee shirts , all sorts of farout kid ’ stuff and nonsense and newly harvested veg .
observe : Close - toed shoes are suggested . On weekend , in the in use time of year , online tickets are urge . although the admission fee is a bit steep , I am happy to donate to put up a working farm like this , which provides helping hand - on activities , education for all in an invite and drug user - favorable manner.www.stonebarncenter.org
One matter that I ’d like to take note is that the staff here was super well-disposed and helpful . The unseasoned homo who checked our reservation at the entree gatehouse , minute later checked me out in the endowment shop . Our duty tour scout , in the greenhouse welcomed us at the entry to the court and also accompanied the chef on the line of business circuit . I quite like that the staff stupefy to moveabout throughout the day and try their hands at the many jobs at the center ( that direction no one ever gets blase and they determine many tasks through experience)–what a expectant work ethic .
