Favorite fiery flowers and foliage

Today we ’re go to cosset in a slight fun with color by celebrate the color red ! Nothing is quite as eye - catch and dramatic as red , cherry , and crimson in the garden . Here are some of my favorite red plants . There are many others . What are your favorites that I missed ?

Windflower(Anemone coronaria , Zones 7–10 ) is native to the Middle East , where it is pollinated by the same mallet that cross-pollinate crimson poppies . seemingly these beetle have a genuine thing for bright red flowers ! In zone 7 and warm , this sea anemone can be planted in the dusk for spring bloom . In the north , you may grow it as a tender bulb by set it as before long as the soil can be work in the spring .

Gladiolus(sword lily , Zones 8–10 , or as a tender medulla oblongata ) come in nearly every color conceivable , but they do vivid , bright scarlet better than almost anything else . implant these affectionate bulbs in the bounce for great summertime color , and bet for scant mixture if you do n’t want to have to post them .

Red does n’t have to come from flowers . lot of leaves plough bright cherry-red in the fall , but few do it as intensely asJapanese maples(Acer palmatum , zone 5–8 ) . The leave-taking are beautiful on the tree diagram , and here they ’re even more lovely scattered over a rich immature carpet of moss .

The fern leafage peony(Paeonia tenuifolia , Zones 4–8 ) has beautiful , airy , touchy leaves , and then the bloom are acute ball of rich , dark red . Like all peonies , it is also tough , disease resistant , and very long lived .

Crocosmia‘Lucifer’(Zones 6–9 ) holds its glorious red flowers in at a refined angle on finespun stem over the upright , swordlike foliage . I ’m a expectant fan , as are hummingbirds !
