Using Softwood Cuttings to Propagate Plants

Cuttings (or “slips”) can be taken from softwood, semi-hardwood, or hardwood plants. Depending on the species you’ll have tons of new plants in 2 to 5 weeks!

One of my favourite plant replication proficiency is to take cutting from a matured plant to create as many new plant as my heart desires . This involves take a vegetative flora part ( vegetal propagation ) and rooting it , as opposed to collecting and planting seed ( sexual propagation ) .

This proficiency is useful to me for a few intellect . One reason is because some flora ( such as rosemary ) can be difficult to set off from seed . Another reasonableness I like it is because the “ baby ” plants I make are n’t really “ baby ” at all….more like dead ringer of the female parent plant .

While they are n’t necessarilytrueclones in thescientific senseof the word — they ’re closemouthed enough for me . Cuttings are fabulous as the lilliputian plants are n’t start their life over , per se — they’reexactlythe same ageas their parent .

For instance , say you have a mother repeated plant ( maybe a genus Pelargonium ) that you love because of her blooms . Once a cutting from that plant life is rooted , it ’ll produce blossoms now — no “ maturing ” call for . I enjoy that it works this way for herb and everything else , too .
